As the world confronts the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, I am doing my part by staying home and limiting my exposure to others. I have an elderly parent in my care and the last thing I want to do is expose her to the unseen and deadly virus that has gripped our nation.
Social distancing is not that difficult for a writer. All my research is done online or from my personal library. I am grateful for both. All my writing is done alone in my writing room. Reading and writing are two of my favorite pastimes, so I am content – except for the dire proclamations I hear and see from news sources.
I have several novels in different stages of completion. The trouble is my focus is not there. My regular discipline to write every day is disrupted because I am distracted by a larger issue that occupies my mind.
As a Christian and as I sit at my computer preparing to work, my thoughts frequently form prayers – prayers for my mother, my grandchildren, my children, my siblings and their families, my friends, my acquaintances, my neighbors; and then expands to include doctors, nurses, first responders, caregivers, the homeless, the poor, grocery workers, truck drivers, government leaders, scientists, and ordinary people facing fear and uncertainty.
Scriptures that fill my heart with certainty and peace are:
Proverbs 3:5-6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not to your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him and He will direct your path.”
Deuteronomy 31:6 – “Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”
Isaiah 41:10 – “So do not fear, for I am with you: do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
1 Peter 3:8 – “Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.”
Philippians 4:6-7 – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
May God be with you and protect you. May you seek Him to calm your fears and anxiety. Be at peace.
